The Cole Foundation Makes a Significant Contribution to the Quebec Leukemia Cell Bank

June 1st, 2009 – The Cole Foundation has just announced that it plans on donating $637 000 to the laboratories of the Quebec Leukemia Cell Bank (QLCB), located at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Research Centre and directed by Dr. Josée Hébert.

This donation, spread over four years, will serve to extend QLCB’s services to include a cell bank for young adults, and to expand the leukemia cell bank made available to researchers across Quebec.

The Quebec Leukemia Cell Bank is a regional program funded by the Réseau de la Recherche sur le Cancer of the Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Québec (FRSQ). Created in 2001, the program brings together hematologists, clinical researchers and scientists from research centres across Quebec and from four Quebec universities (McGill University, University of Laval, University of Sherbrooke and University of Montreal).

The Cole Foundation’s donation will help further the QLCB’s mission, providing hematology, oncology and immunology researchers with the infrastructure and services for:

  • understanding the mechanisms of blood cancers;
  • improving the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of blood cancers;
  • providing quality training to specialized professionals and students.

The Cole Foundation was created in 1980 by Montreal businessman John N. (Jack) Cole to support pediatric oncology and hematology research.

Last spring, the Cole Foundation awarded fellowships to three students of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Research Centre in support of their promising research initiatives (See the news release dated May 28, 2008: “Our Distinguished Students".)
