Dr. Jean-Philippe Lafrance Joins the Nephrology Research Department
August 26, 2009 – The CRHMR is very pleased to welcome Dr. Jean-Philippe Lafrance, MD MSc, to its Nephrology Research Department. Dr. Lafrance joined the team on July 01, 2009 to specifically conduct research in the areas of pharmacoepidemiology and kidney diseases.
Dr. Lafrance did a post-doctorate in pharmacoepidemiology at Boston University, for which he was presented with the prestigious KRESCENT award; jointly attributed by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFC) and the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN) under the national program for scientific training of specialized research investigators in the field of kidney research.
Research Interests
Dr. Lafrance’s main research interests deal with:
- renal side effects such as acute kidney injury, following the use of drugs widely used by the general population (ex: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs);
- drug use and drug side effects in patients who have chronic kidney disease or who require dialysis;
- the epidemiology and risk factors of infectious complications in patients with end-stage kidney disease;
- he incidence, risk factors and consequences related to acute kidney injury in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Previous Studies
Dr. Lafrance’s previous studies compared the risk of acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia among different non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These findings could help clinicians choose suitable medication for patients.
His other studies revealed that on a long-term basis there is a higher risk of mortality in patients who experienced acute kidney injury during hospitalization. These new findings will lead to new studies that aim to improve the screening of patients diagnosed with acute kidney injury with the goal of reducing mortality and long-term complications.
Dr. Lafrance is also a practicing clinician at the Department of Nephrology of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital.
We would like to extend him a warm welcome and wish him the best of luck in his research!
