Dr Janetta Bijl Receives an Award from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada
October 28, 2008 –On October 17, Dr Janetta Bijl received the Murray Margarit Memorial award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada for her outstanding research on the regulatory role of HoxA genes in blood cell development. Most often, these genes are associated to leukemia. For example, in the case of myeloid leukemia, the presence of one of the Hoxa9 genes entails an unfavourable prognosis. Dr Bijl is convinced that understanding the function of these genes will serve to develop new leukemia treatment. She dedicated her award to Dr Nathalie Beslu, a close friend who perished just a few days earlier, and with whom she investigated Hox genes for many years.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers. Every year, awards are given to individuals, clinicians and companies, who have contributed to advancing the Society's mission. The Murray Margarit Memorial award honours five research investigators among a remarkably large number of funding applicants. Dr Bijl was the only Quebecer this year to have been honoured with this award.
